OPEN CALL
Early-Career NISA Symposium for PhDs and Postdocs, 13.-15 December 2023:
The European Security Order Following Russia’s War in Ukraine
Russia’s violent attack on and comprehensive invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has significantly disrupted the established European security order, leading to profound implications worthy of attention for various disciplines engaging with International Relations. These implications extend to crucial areas such as the structure of the European security architecture, arms control agreements, energy security, food security, as well as human rights and international criminal justice. In order to delve deeply into these multifaceted implications and facilitate interdisciplinary discussions among scholars, the NISA Executive Board is delighted to announce an upcoming symposium titled “European Security Order Following Russia’s War in Ukraine”.
We invite early career researchers (PhD fellows and Postdocs) affiliated with a Nordic university or research institution, to participate in this symposium, which will provide a unique platform for younger scholars to present and receive valuable feedback on work in progress. The NISA Symposium aims to explore the multifaceted dimensions of the past and the evolving European security order resulting from Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. NISA encourages participants to approach the topic from various interdisciplinary angles, shedding light on diverse perspectives and fostering rich academic dialogue.
Topics of particular interest for this symposium include but are not limited to:
- The impact of Russia’s war of aggression on European foreign, security, and defense policies and strategies
- Development of European security and defense cooperation in response to the war, including the role of the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
- The significance of arms control agreements in upholding European security and their potential adaptations in response to recent developments.
- Dynamics of energy security and the implications arising from Russia’s actions on the energy supply landscape of Europe.
- Human rights violations, civilian protection and the challenges in safeguarding human rights in the aftermath of the conflict.
- The role of international criminal justice mechanisms in addressing potential war crimes and violations of international law.
We invite researchers from various disciplines, including International Relations, Political Science, History, Law, Sociology, and other related fields to submit abstracts of their ongoing research. Abstracts should outline the initial objectives, methodology, and main findings of the study, emphasizing its relevance to the symposium’s theme.
The symposium will take place 13th-15th December 2023 at Schæffergården, Gentofte, DK.
Submission information and timeline:
- Abstract submission deadline: 15 September, 2023
- Notification of acceptance: 2 October, 2023
- Paper submission: Two weeks before the NISA Symposium (29 November, 2023)
Each participant will be given dedicated time slot during the Symposium to present their research and engage in insightful discussions with fellow researchers.
