SUMMARY:FISA Conference 2025: Call for Papers & Panels
DESCRIPTION:The Finnish International Studies Association (FISA) organises its eighth triannual FISA Conference in cooperation with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland\, the Ministry of Defence of Finland\, the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA) and the Foundation for Foreign Policy Research. The conference provides a comprehensive\, timely\, and multidisciplinary overview of the state of International Relations research\, bringing together researchers and actors within the field of international politics. The conference will be held at the historic Scandic Valtionhotelli in Imatra\, on 24-25 January 2025. \nThe theme of the 2025 FISA Conference is Borders\, Old and New. \nRussia’s war of aggression in Ukraine has shown\, in a horrifying manner\, that borders can be contested also in the European continent. It has reminded us that borders are always fluid constructions\, whose legitimacy differs across actors. These developments have led to a heightened political and economic focus on geography\, and thus highlighted the importance of geopolitics and -economics for the stability and prosperity of regions. These issues are acutely important in the Eastern Finnish border region\, where the 2025 FISA Conference is held. The panels in the FISA conference accordingly examine borders\, old and new\, from a variety of theoretical\, analytical and methodological perspectives. \nThe conference keynotes will be delivered by professors Sonia Lucarelli (University of Bologna) and Ayşe Zarakol (University of Cambridge). \nPAPER AND PANEL PROPOSALS \nFISA invites papers and panels for workshop sessions. They can deal with various aspects of International Relations\, including both theoretical and empirical contributions. The papers do not need to be directly related to the overall theme of the conference\, but it is recommended. Topics of interest include\, but are not limited to the ones listed below: \nBorders; Alliances in international politics; The Arctic; Challenges and challengers to the rules-based international order; Environment in international politics; The European Union; Political violence\, extremism and terrorism; Theories of the international; The party politics of foreign and security policy; Foresight in international politics; Nordic cooperation; Language and meaning in international politics; Feminist approaches to world politics; Geoeconomics and the evolving international political economy; The global south in international politics; Strategic competition and great-power politics; International law and International Relations; Foreign policy; Development studies; Peace research; and Strategic studies. \nNB: THE PAPER AND PANEL PROPOSALS CAN BE SUBMITTED IN ENGLISH\, FINNISH OR SWEDISH. PLEASE USE THE SAME FORM FOR ALL THREE LANGUAGES \nThe call for papers and panels is open until 1 September 2024. \nLINK TO THE FORM FOR FISA 2025 PANEL PROPOSALS \nLINK TO THE FORM FOR FISA 2025 PAPER PROPOSALS \nNISA will cover the participation (including accommodation and meals\, train tickets and one hotel night in Helsinki if needed)\, of up to ten (10) researchers from other Nordic countries who will present a paper at the FISA conference. Travels to Finland will not be covered. Preference is given to young researchers. \nMore information: \nVille Sinkkonen\, Chairperson of FISA\, ville.sinkkonen@fiia.fi + 358 9 432 7783

SUMMARY:Successful NISA Symposium for young scholars
DESCRIPTION:In December\, 2023\, NISA welcomed 17 early career researchers from several different Nordic institutions to its first NISA Young Scholar Symposium. The Symposium was targeted for PhDs\, Post Docs\, and research assistants to tackle crucial issues pertaining to European security following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Symposium participants represented key research institutions in Denmark\, Sweden\, Norway\, and Finland and included several Ukrainian researchers based in these institutions.  \nOn day one\, NISA President Professor Nina Græger gave an opening address to welcome the Symposium participants. This was followed by a keynote speech by NISA Executive Board Member Professor Rebecca Adler-Nissen on Russia and the Challenges to the International Order: Authoritarian Disinformation and Struggles for Recognition followed by Q & A. Both Græger and Adler-Nissen participated in the different workshop sessions during day one.  \nOn day two of the Symposium\, Executive Director of the Danish Refugee Council Eva Grambye delivered a keynote\, focusing on the continuous\, intricate humanitarian challenges of the ongoing war in Ukraine as well as providing a comprehensive examination of the politics affecting the ability of NGOs to provide sufficient aid.  \nPlease see the full program here. \nThe Symposium was structured around feedback workshop sessions\, allowing the participants to share valuable feedback on each other’s ongoing work. The participants were divided into three groups (1: Institutional responses\, 2: Narratives and hybrid warfare\, and 3: Materiality and militarization) based on the topics of their respective pre-distributed papers. \nTopics of the submitted papers included: \n\nThe impact of Russia’s war of aggression on European foreign\, security\, and defense policies and strategies\nDevelopment of European security and defense cooperation in response to the war\, including the role of the European Union (EU)\, the United Nations (UN) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)\nThe significance of arms control agreements in upholding European security and their potential adaptations in response to recent developments\nDynamics of energy security and the implications arising from Russia’s actions on the energy supply landscape of Europe\nHuman rights violations\, civilian protection and the challenges in safeguarding human rights in the aftermath of the conflict\nThe role of international criminal justice mechanisms in addressing potential war crimes and violations of international law\nCompeting narratives surrounding the war\, especially in terms of misinformation strategies\, postcolonial perspectives\, and the growing influence of Big Tech and artificial intelligence\n\nNISA thanks the participants for engaging meaningfully with these topics and the work of their peers\, and Olivia Hammershøy for taking a major role in organizing the Symposium. The NISA Executive Committee aims at repeating the success to strengthen the Nordic academic community and research on issues of special importance to the Nordic region and Europe at large.

SUMMARY:Call: Early-Career NISA Symposium for PhDs and Postdocs! Deadline: 15.09.23
DESCRIPTION:The NISA Executive Committee is pleased to announce an open call for a NISA-sponsored academic Symposium aimed at early-career academics. The Symposium will take place in Copenhagen in mid-December 2023. Please see below for more information. \n  \nOPEN CALL \nEarly-Career NISA Symposium for PhDs and Postdocs\, 13.-15 December 2023: \nThe European Security Order Following Russia’s War in Ukraine \nRussia’s violent attack on and comprehensive invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has significantly disrupted the established European security order\, leading to profound implications worthy of attention for various disciplines engaging with International Relations. These implications extend to crucial areas such as the structure of the European security architecture\, arms control agreements\, energy security\, food security\, as well as human rights and international criminal justice. In order to delve deeply into these multifaceted implications and facilitate interdisciplinary discussions among scholars\, the NISA Executive Board is delighted to announce an upcoming symposium titled “European Security Order Following Russia’s War in Ukraine”. \nWe invite early career researchers (PhD fellows and Postdocs) affiliated with a Nordic university or research institution\, to participate in this symposium\, which will provide a unique platform for younger scholars to present and receive valuable feedback on work in progress. The NISA Symposium aims to explore the multifaceted dimensions of the past and the evolving European security order resulting from Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
